Kuleana
2018, Welded and threaded post-industrial and post-consumer ocean plastic, hardware, LEDs, solar panel, 5’ x 5’ x 8’ | 1.52 x 1.52 x 2.44m
Kuleana is the Hawaiian word for responsibility or karma. It is a sculpture that was made during a 1-month residency on Oahu. It is comprised of post-industrial ocean plastic collected by Sustainable Coastlines. My artist collaborator and husband Marshall Coles and I worked around the clock at a farm, through a hurricane and multiple setbacks to create this piece by our deadline, with gracious support from the Pu’uhonua Society, Maile Meyer, the Asia Society, The Colby Family, The Mallard Family, Kualoa Ranch, and The Roberts-Conklin Family.
